23, 2004 Floor Repair Part 2Today I planned to install the brace and start fabricating the remaining sheetmetal floor pieces needed to finish the patch. I was on-target to get it done and started cleaning the weld areas for the lower brace (thanks for the advice, Nick). I used a wire wheel on my grinder to clean out the little area between the frame, floor and body mount where the bracket will be welded. There are also two holes where the bracket was spot-welded to the body mount, and I used a die grinder to clean out those holes so I can use them to secure the new bracket. I'll also place some welds around the perimeter of the bracket to really strengthen the whole area.
So I'm all set to get the bracket in there and start welding, but then I look at my bracket and realize that the naked steel will probably rust again someday if I don't seal it up before enclosing the area against the floor. So I broke out the Zero-Rust and coated the inside of the bracket. The good news is that this area will probably never rust again. The bad news is that I'll have to wait 24 hours before I can weld the bracket to the floor.
So with my plans shot, I grabbed my grinder and dressed the welds on the floor patch I did last week. It took about 15 minutes and I discovered that my welds were pretty good--there were only two places where the weld had some porosity. I'll close those up after the bracket is in place and I have the welder out.
So tomorrow I'll install the bracket. My buddy Tom and I were scheduled to take a welding course together on Wednesday, but it was cancelled. So he's going to come over later this week and practice on my equipment. I'm going to try to get the bracket on before then. Previous
