February 16, 2005 More RefinishingWhile not the most exciting jobs in the world, a big part of restoration is cleaning, stripping and refinishing little parts. I finished the parts I blasted last week and put a second coat on some that had thin spots. I also broke out the argent silver powder and tried it on the brake backing plates in an attempt to duplicate a cad-plated look without actually plating them. I'm not sure of the results yet--the first step is shown below, but it isn't quite right. Not yet anyway...
I also finished blasting one of the springs, and it was a real pain in the neck. I'm going to try sanding the other one by hand (that's a switch--sanding by hand may be easier than using a sandblaster!). There was still some rust and scale on the blasted spring and it seemed that I just couldn't chase it all down and clean it up. So I removed the spring, soaked a Scotch-brit pad in Picklex-20 and scrubbed it down. That should take care of any remaining rust pockets before powder coating.
Then I tried doing some experimenting with the new argent silver powder. I believe that it is supposed to be top coated with clear powder. In the can, it looked about the right color to pass for silver cadmium plating, but it bakes into a near-chrome finish. A top coat of clear should enhance the chrome-like sheen. Unfortunately, that's not quite what I'm looking for, and I am going to try adding some deglosser to the next batch and then top coating with a satin clear. Hopefully that will approximate a cad finish. If not, I'll have to think of something else.
I'll hit the second coat and get some black powder on the spring tomorrow. Previous Restoration Day E-mail me at toolman8@sbcglobal.net This page accessed times Thanks, Fidget! |
